Khmer New Year Festival

Friday-Sunday ,April 14-16 from 09:00 am-5:00 p.m.

Khmer New Year Celebration is the gathering of Buddhist Followers where everyone come together to pay respect to the Triple Gem, to receive the five precepts, to chant the great Paritta, to offer alms into alms bowls. These religious ritual ceremonies include offering food to the Buddhist Monks, receiving blessing from the monks and priests, and listening to special sermon.   Moha Sangkran Buddhism is the first day of New Year; this is the day where followers pay tributes the Buddha teaching.  Vireak Vanabat is the second day of New Year celebration. People contribute money, offer food and clothing to local charities for good karma and receive blessings. Families often attend a dedication ceremony to their ancestors at monasteries. Tngai Loeng Sak is the third day of the New Year celebration. On this day, Buddhist followers take Buddha statues from their homes to participate in the bathing ceremony at the temple. Families and friends wash the Buddha statues, monks and their elders with perfumed water and in return, they receive blessings from the monks and elders. Bathing of the Buddha statues and monks is a symbolic practice to wash bad actions away and to bring longevity, good luck, happiness and prosperity in life. By washing their grandparents and parents, the children can obtain best wishes and good advice from them.  In addition, Buddhist followers wash their faces with the holly water for good luck. They also build sand hill on the temple ground and decorate the main mound with five religious flags one on the top and four mounds around on the side. These sand hills represent the Buddha's five disciples.  Traditionally, Khmer music and games will be playing thorough out the day. Please come and join the celebration!

The Branch of International Community of Khmer Buddhist Monk Center founded by the Supreme Patriarch of Cambodian Buddhism Preah Moha Ghosandanda is seeking your help to build a Praying Hall (Preah Vihear) in Oakland, CA. The praying hall is not just to honor the great work of Preah Maha Ghosandanda, but also to promote peace and serve as the pillar and symbol of the survivors of the Khmer Rouge regime.  Most importantly, this temple will provide a peaceful place for surviving elderlies and children to pray, heal, and find solace for their trauma and suffering. They lost countless family members and loved ones during one of the worst genocides in human history.

Cultural, Art, Language preservation: This new praying hall will be different from other Cambodian praying hall in the U.S.; this praying hall is featuring the ancient sculpture and design replicate the architecture of Prasat Banteay Srei.  Prasat Bantey Srei - the 10th-century Cambodian temple with decorative design of Angorian construction standard.  This design selection is to preserve the Khmer ancient art of Angkor.  This new Praying Hall will also serve as site for New Year’s ceremonies, language classes and senior center for Cambodian refugees living in Alameda County and others. The blue print of this praying hall is designed by a Cambodian architect from Los Angeles and a master contractor from the Royal University of Fine Art of Cambodia.  Both of these masters are coming together as a join effort creating a unique structure comply with U.S. building codes as well retaining the ancient workmanship of Ankgor time. Many Cambodian refugee elderlies living in the U.S.A are unable to travel back home to visit Angkor Wat due to health condition, economic, financial hardship and others.  This site will serve as worship place to community members as well as the heritage site preserving art, culture and literacy for Cambodian refugees living in the U.S.

At this very moment, we are desperately in need of a praying hall in the temple.  Prior fundraising events have raised and the sum of $200,000 which was used to purchase two lots for a monastery and parking lot.  We need to raise an additional $1,163,00.00 (one million one hundred sixty three thousand dollars) to complete the construction of the praying hall.

Your generous donation of any amount (whether $1, $10, $100, $1,000 or any amount) will make a great impact to help complete the praying hall.  Your donation will also help preserve the Cambodian traditions and to beautify the surrounding neighborhood and businesses with this new temple.  We need supports from our members, as wells as the benevolence of community businesses and individuals to help us reach our goal.

Please see our recommendation of lump sum contribution to help us meeting our goal.
